Dan Fernholz (He, Him, His) is a clinical trainee at Hamm Clinic. He is in his third year of the PsyD program at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota and holds a master’s degree in counseling. Dan has experience in college counseling in an integrated setting, crisis intervention and de-escalation, and has spent several years working in acute inpatient psychiatric care where he also is an instructor in clinical education. His research interests include suicide-risk assessment, personality disorders, schema theory, and trauma.

In his clinical work, Dan seeks to collaborate with clients to explore their experiences, both present and past, that have influenced the way they approach problems and relate to others in their lives. Dan strives to be sensitive to the unique combinations of personal identities, cultural influences, and family structures that each client brings to the work. His approach to therapy emphasizes the identification of learned patterns of responding that no longer benefit the client and facilitating growth that leads to a more satisfying connection with the self and in relationships.

Dan has previously trained in interpersonal process and relational techniques and has experience working with identity development, family of origin issues, eating disorders, grief support, and complex trauma as well as anxiety and depression. Dan brings a warm and welcoming spirit to his work that seeks connection with each new and unique client.
